Giving full attention to painting, hunger comes suddenly. Putting down my brushes, I dash out to a favorite haunt for sustenance. Ummmmm ….sugar. Looking at my Cuban tres leches cake, I wonder, who makes this? 80 year old mama, I’m told. Thus, the mom and pop series is born.
This quest leads me throughout my community to capture and render the personality, family and history of local chefs. Like a delicious dish, I think of these paintings as magic realism.
As I brush color around, I’m enthralled watching my subject emerge. In my studio, I am entranced by the struggles, triumphs, and clashes of eye, hand and brain co-ordination, always seduced by the element of surprise.
This visual body of work is my way of speaking, recording history, and presenting my most enjoyable existence.
